Great Advice!

I finally got this book at the urging of a Kiwi friend, who used the author's works to raise his own children. I've been having a lot of trouble as a single mother trying to raise two boys, so I've been desperate for ANY help. From the first chapter, I gained an almost instant understanding of what was going on with my boys - and, much to my delight, I learned that they're perfectly normal teenage boys! I immediately began seeing my sons' words and actions in a different light, and it has made a world of difference already. Those "ah-ha!" moments have been wonderful! We experienced a family tragedy just as I finished reading the section of the book on how boys deal with such things. My boys reacted exactly as predicted, but had I not read the book, I would have been hurt and angry at them for they way they handled the situation. By knowing that they did so in the "normal way" for boys, I was able to wait for them to ask for more information or comfort. I cannot thank Ms. Lashlie enough for her work on this book, as well as the "Good Man Project".

Read for a Better Understanding of Teenage Boys

I like to think that I have a pretty good handle on parenting. As a teacher of secondary school kids and a parent of two teenagers I am surrounded by 'teens'. However, I found that my teen son was leaving me flabbergastered at times with his behaviour and 'unreasonable' logic. This book has been a godsend, providing a solid understanding of the development of teenage boys and then giving practical advice. I borrowed this book from the local library a few years ago and really enjoyed reading it then. My son was only 10 at the time. However, after getting my Kindle for Christmas last year I eagerly searched out this book in order to buy a copy for myself - my son had turned 14 and was driving me crazy. The format of explaining boys' behaviour according to their Yr level at school (Australian system) was really helpful for me on both levels as a parent and teacher. I think that this book should be mandatory reading for all teachers of secondary school boys. Many teachers forget that students respond better to understanding and compassionate discipline, rather than outright dominance and punishment. Even though it at times can be general, the explanations of why boys act the way they do at certain ages can be applied to a wide variety of individuals. Read this book if you want to understand your son on a deeper level.

Excellent and informative, a great perspective.

This book gives you the insight as to when the time is right to step back and allow your son to begin making his own decisions and accept the responsibility for them. Only through this process can he become his own man. It is difficult, after being a mother for so many years, to sit back, relax, and actually trust our sons to take more control of their lives, and in the process relinquish our own. These boys are ready much sooner than we think they are, and realizing this allows for a much easier (and happier) transition through the teenage years. Every mother should read this book, the information and advise it offers will change your life!
