About the Author
Dr de Alwis obtained specialist training in emergency medicine in New Zealand and Australia and works as an emergency medicine consultant at Logan Hospital in Brisbane, Australia. As the Director of Emergency Medicine Training he contributed to the development of the training programme in the hospital since 2008. He will be practising as an emergency medicine consultant in both adult and paediatric emergency departments in The Prince Charles Hospital in Brisbane from late 2012. His special interests include specialist training in emergency medicine and healthcare leadership.

Dr Weiner completed her master's degree in emergency medicine at the University of Cape Town, South Africa. She subsequently attained fellowships from emergency medicine colleges in both South Africa and Australasia. Currently she is practising as an emergency consultant at Logan Hospital in Brisbane, Australia. Dr Weiner is actively engaged in the ACEM fellowship training programme at Logan Hospital, as well as being an accredited supervisor for the ACEM Emergency Medicine Certificate Programme. She is a co-founder of the post-graduate Advanced Paediatric Emergency Medicine (APEM) course, an ACEM fellowship exam preparation course covering the ACEM paediatric emergency medicine curriculum. Her special interests include thrombolysis for acute stroke in the ED, emergency ultrasound and paediatric emergency Medicine in mixed ED settings.

Dr Rowley Richards MBE, AO, has had a distinguished career in medicine. In 1969 Rowley was awarded an MBE for his services in war and peace, and in 1993 he received an Order of Australia for services to sports medicine and the annual City to Surf fun run. Now a spritely 87, Rowley lives in Sydney, with his wife, Beth.

Well written by a prominent and compassionate physician who suffered the horrors of the "Death Railway" built by mostly ANZAC and Dutch POW's for the Japanese During WWII. I was in Thailand recently, near the infamous railway extending from Myanmar through Thailand. The film "The Bridge on the River Kwai" is an absolute travesty, a fiction that completely dilutes the savagery of the Japanese and the hell the POW's experienced. Dr Richards helps set the record straight with his harrowing account of his time as a physician tending to his fellow prisoners. all the more compelling is the fact that the book is based on diaries he kept under extreme conditions and later buried to escape retaliation. It was only dug up after the war and returned to him. As a physician, I was hoping for more clinical information regarding the specifics of the diseases, injuries and treatment available under unbearable conditions, and was disappointed Dr Richards did not expand on this aspect. An important contribution to the Pacific theater of WWII, too often overlooked.

About the Author
In 1991 Bev Aisbett launched a full-time freelance career in cartooning and illustration. Around this time, she experienced an ordeal commonly known as anxiety disorder. Out of this experience she developed the character 'IT' which led to the successful publication of LIVING WITH IT, LIVING IT UP and LETTING IT GO. Bev has also published the successful TAMING THE BLACK DOG: A GUIDE TO DEPRESSION, as well as THE LITTLE BOOK OF IT and RECOVERY: A JOURNEY OF HEALING. She is the co-author of GET REAL, dealing with body image and eating disorders. Bev is a trained counsellor, and runs a recovery program for sufferers of anxiety.

I found the book to be of Immense help in aiding me in getting to know myself. Americans Liz and Jack Harper are thrilled to inherit an old house in the tiny Shropshire town of Marston Lacy. They ask their British friend Michael Flint, a junior don at Oxford's Oriel College, to check it out. When Michael takes several pictures of the imposing structure, called Charect House, he's slightly unsettled by a figure he sees in an upper window. At this point, the diary accounts (circa 1988) of Dr. Alice Wilson, a Special Investigator for Psychic Research, begin to be woven into the narrative, along with the perspective of Nell West, a young widow new to Marston Lacy. Nell, who has a small antiques business in town, has been hired by the Harpers to help furnish the house. She visits Charect with her young daughter Beth, whom she has been careful to shield from the world. Upon discovering Wilson's diary, Nell learns that the house's name has been changed. Once Michael and Nell's paths cross, they begin a very muted flirtation. Beth begins having violent nightmares and one day vanishes from school. Beside herself, Nell rushes to the police station. At length, Michael finds a similar case from decades ago. Further research stretches all the way back to the late 19th century. Dark episodes from the past counterpoint Michael and Nell's present-day attempts to save Beth.

About the Author
Professor Mary Louise Fleming is Head of the School of Public Health at the Queensland University of Technology. She has over 20 years’ experience in teaching and research in higher education as well as public health and health promotion. Her research experience is in action research; process, impact and outcome evaluation in health promotion; and public health interventions. Mary Louise has worked as a consultant for the World Health Organization and Commonwealth and state health departments and has sat on National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) public health project grant review panels. She has been widely published in the area of health promotion.

Elizabeth Parker is an Adjunct Associate Professor, and formerly Director of Academic Programs, in the School of Public Health at the Queensland University of Technology. She has teaching and research experience in public health and health promotion, and was a member of the Editorial Advisory Committee for the Health Promotion Journal of Australia. She worked as a senior manager in the Toronto Department of Public Health, and has acted as a consultant on projects for the Australian Government and Queensland Health.

OK for 1st public health book.

Very simplistic overview of public health. Perhaps ok for someone with no health experience. Virtually useless if you have any healthcare training already.
Strong Australasian focus. Some may find this irrelevant or off putting.
