About the Author
David Hewson is a former journalist with The Times, The Sunday Times and the Independent. He is the author of more than twenty-five novels including his Rome-based Nic Costa series which has been published in fifteen languages. He has also written three acclaimed adaptations of the Danish TV series, The Killing. He lives near Canterbury in Kent

Highly recommended

LIke Hewson's other works, this is simply excellent. It is full of very complex and fascinating characters, a wonderfully evocative atmosphere (it is set in Florence), suspense, some romance, and a few surprises. It is all served in a clean crisp prose style. Speaking as a historian, one of the things I valued most about the novel is the theme that the past continues to infuse and shape the present. Okay, that's my personal bias, but Hewson explores this concept through a number of different plot lines and characters and the result makes for a fascinating novel -- whether you love history or not. The setting is in Florence, a magnificent city that continues to wear its remarkable history like a stylish cloak and its art like jewels. But in 1966, torrential rains and bursting dams upriver caused the usually sedate Arno River to breach its banks and flood the city, causing widespread death and devastation. Over 100 people lost their lives in the worst flooding since the 16th century. Countless works of art, rare manuscripts, books and artifacts were damaged or destroyed completely. It took decades for the city to rebuild, recover, and restore the damage done to its treasures. Individuals who lived through the devastation were changed by it. It is this defining event that sets into motion the story that evolves decades later. I highly recommend this novel for an intelligent, suspenseful read..

A new location and characters

I have enjoyed Hewson's Roman detective stories and have missed them for 3 years now. Nice he is writing novels again, though he has introduced a new location and new main characters. It will take some time to adopt. Much like the novelist Lindsey Davis dropping her Didius Falco character after 12 or so novels and beginning anew with his adoptive daughter as the new main character. It will take getting use to. The Flood was interesting, novel even, but the end was foreseeable. Hard to see where the future storyline will continue as there is a huge age gap and country gap between main characters. Using Days of the week as separating points rather than chapters was a distraction. There appeared to be 80 or so pages in some spots in this 250 + page book.

The Flood -- David Hewson
Picture it ... Florence, 1986. Adam and Eve. Our heroine is called Julia Wellbeloved. Our hero is Pino Fratelli.
How can you go wrong?
Julia, an art student, is doing research on art vandalism. Her path crosses Pino, a former cop, and together they try to figure out the reason behind an attack of a church fresco of Adam and Eve.
Through their research, the reader learns more about the history of Florence, like the flood of 1966 -- an important fact.
What can I say, I'm a sucker for anything Italian: food, wine ... books!
I honestly enjoyed The Flood thanks to David Hewson's attention to detail and brilliant plot sculpting.
I can recommend this to anyone with an Italian yearning and an adventurous side.
