Smart Thriller that Delivers Major Fireworks

The Price of Liberty begins the way a novel set in Wyoming should - with a bar fight at a rural honky tonk called the Stumble Inn. It doesn't take long for Graff to veer into more serious territory, as two senators with ties to the funding of a new Gitmo-style prison are taken on a "Wyoming safari" by someone who has never hunted a day in his life. Don't be fooled by the balance of dark humor and political schmoozing; there are far too many guns, big egos and lucrative government contracts rumbling around for the novel to be merely commentary. About a third of the way into the book, Graff's carefully crafted conflicts start paying off in choice, explosive chunks of blistering action.
Graff is a first-rate wordsmith, with tight, highly observant prose that lends itself to easy management of an ensemble cast of characters. Although the book's protagonist is the sympathetic Jack McEnroe, an employee of a Halliburton-like government contracting firm, Graff has created an excellent character in Dave Fetters, a classic big fish in a small pond with so much to hide. As the book's stakes get increasingly higher, it's fun to watch Fetters squirm by virtue of his own misdeeds. To say more would be to spoil some nice surprises, but suffice to say that The Price of Liberty is smart political fiction with enough fireworks to light up the entire West Coast.

Buy this book and become a big fan

Keir Graff is a talented `new-to-me' writer and I'm very excited about reading the balance of his work.
Readers will notice from page one that Graff has a masterful ear for dialogue, what makes a good line in fiction and what really rings true from a character's viewpoint. In short it seems Graff is a master of characterization. As I read this book I kept laughing and saying to myself "I know these people"...
Set in Wyoming, I had the pleasure and pain of growing up out West; Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, and Utah. I have to say that Graff nailed the sensibility of folks in these parts. He also feels a great deal for his characters because if they were written with less nuance and smartness (even the dumb ones) they simply would become cliches...
But that doesn't even come close to happening in TPoL. What I felt (and perhaps I'm dating myself here) was akin to reading the vivid characters and story telling on a par with early James Crumley novels (like Last Good Kiss) and Edward Abbey novels (like Desert Solitaire, although the plot contains a modicum less anarchy than an Abbey novel).
Prickly, fleshed out, humorous and smart. All are the folks you will find inhabit the world of Red Rock, Wyoming where the story is set. I will say that I'm not super current the action genre (not typically reading books where bodies pile up like matchsticks) but Graff's writing could get me over there - just as Crumley and Abby's novels have done in the past. Enjoyable, high quality, page turners...
TPoL is straightforward story of deceit and greed populated, again, by real seeming characters. The book also offers an interesting dichotomy of the American popular male/female ethos...
The hero, Jack McEnroe (great name BTW) is a moral relativist (aren't we all?) who acts out his emotional range with honor and his physical body. Punch first, think later. Where-as the women in the novel, like Jack's ex-wife and mother to his kids, Jack's hipster girlfriend wanna-be, and old, personal friend, the revered and feared local librarian, are all women that carry with them the better virtues that comes with thought before action. They are the moral compass of the action in the book.
And there is lots of action too! In this world we also see that two of the worse actors (the father and son team of villains who of course end up paying the price of liberty), that it turns out these are men completely cut off from women and any of their good and moderating influences (they live in a giant man-cave for gosh sakes!)...
So without women where would we be? Would it be just life and death world of the modern American Wild West??? Certainly seems so in TPoL...
But don't let my literary deconstruction, valid or not, get in the way of your buying this book for a purely entertaining read...It's just that the writing is so darn good it begs the question to look more deeply and see what Keir Graff is saying about sex and culture in this day and age.
Buy his book and become a big fan.

A good sizzler!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and shared it with an avid-reader friend of mine, who dubbed it "a good sizzler!" It's exactly that! It is hopping and jumping with action, and humor as well. It's hard to pull off that combination; if the humor isn't done right in a book with an otherwise dark tone, it falls flat, or takes away from the seriousness of the plotline. Here, weighty issues of morality and politics are the main fare, not to mention tense suspense, but at points I found myself laughing out loud. Shane Fetters, the antagonist, is a buffoon; we have to take him seriously, because he's a dangerous buffoon, but the scene where he crashes an important lunch hosted by his father, wearing stolen sunglasses to hide his bar-brawl black eye, is one of the funniest in the book. Jack McEnroe, the hero, isn't perfect but he's tough and likable; he's one of the good guys, although flawed, kind of like many of Stephen King's main characters. Even secondary characters are nuanced, such as Jack's ex-wife, and the elder Fetters, the head of the contracting company charged with building the super-maximum-security prison. Set aside a block of time for this -- you will not want to put it down.
