For not only has Gaunt’s treasure trove been stolen, he has reason to believe a French spy is active along the Thames, carefully recording for his masters in the Louvre the state of English war cogs. And a professional assassin, Beowulf, who has sworn vengeance against Gaunt and his minions, also stalks the shadows. Once again, Athelstan must enter the murky world of murder, where the darkness constantly shifts and no one is who or what they seem.

Another gripping tale of Brother Athelstan, parish priest of St Erconwald, also clerk and secretary to Sir John Cranston, City of London Coroner. 1381 is a time of great unrest in London - King Richard 11 is still a minor and Duke John of Gaunt is the Protector of the Realm. Tax collectors are sent out all over the country to collect the taxes for the Treasury however many of them are being killed by a saxon called Beowulf. Edmund Marsen, his clerk Mauclerc and his archers escape an ambush set by Beowulf and return to the Candle Flame Tavern to rest and celebrate. They reside in the Barbican - a small fortress on the Palisade near the Tavern. That night while enjoying the company of 2 whores, all those within the Barbican, are mysteriously killed as well as two archers beside their campfire. The chest of gold and silver coin disappears. Athelstan and Sir John are asked to solve the mystery of how all these people have been killed inside a locked fortress, find the missing tax money and search out Beowulf. A great story with many turns and twists before the truth comes out.

OK Tale, But Not My Favorite

I was disappointed in this book. I really love this series, and was looking forward to reading it. I held off because of the sharp increase in price over the previous books. I'm not sure it was worth the money I paid for it.

The plot centers around a murder in a tower. All of the doors and windows are barricaded. The treasure is missing. Two of the victims were despicable characters, and the list of people wanting to see them dead was long. Some of the good guys aren't really that good.

It seems that the theme of a locked room and missing treasure is used too often. It's a fallback plot for many writer's. This story was OK, but just not that special.

After being disappointed in this book, I am not sure that I will pay the high price of the next book due out shortly. If my library carried the series, I would get it on loan. Since it doesn't, I may have to end my reading of the Brother Athelstan series due to the cost. I really don't think kindle books should be as high or higher priced than paperbacks. I really thing twice about reading any Kindle book that is $9.00 or higher.

Favorite series better with each book

I'm so glad I have the next in this excellent series ("The Book of Fires") on hand so I can dive right in - Paul Doherty has given readers a darker outing for Sir Jack and Brother Athelstan with "Candle Flame", and the tension is ratcheting up toward the coming conflagration that will be the Peasants' Revolt of 1381. London is straining under the burden of taxation imposed by Regent John of Gaunt, and acts of rebellion are increasing as the Upright Men clash openly in the streets with Gaunt's soldiers. One of Gaunt's most devious and detested tax collectors is murdered along with his entourage at a Southwark tavern called the Candle Flame and the treasure he had collected disappears; soon Cranston and Athelstan are wrestling with yet another impossible murder, several suspects and a city about to boil over in open revolt...

This is one of my favorite historical mystery series and it gets better with every book - Doherty is one of my all-time favorite mystery writers and although I've enjoyed his Hugh Corbett series, the Amerotke series set in ancient Egypt and the chilling Canterbury mysteries, Athestan and Sir Jack's adventures are the most satisfying and engrossing. Highly recommended.

The hero is a cold,mean brute who does not deserve his gentle wife Kassia.He should have been made to marry Joanna the shrewish woman he was betrothed to.I couldn't get past Graelam raping Kassia,I really couldn't.I know this is medieval England and women were more or less treated like chattel,but come on.Kassia is a gentle sweet girl who does everything to please this philandering,brute of a man.He sleeps with one of the servants after he marries Kassia, when she confronts him he threatens to beat and rape her which he had already done(I shuddered again right there).There's not one but two women undermining Kassia's authority and she sits back and takes this,please!The servants and his own soldiers abhor his treatment of Kassia throughout the book.I prayed for her to runaway with Dienwald or for Guy to fall in love with her and take her away from Graelam.The women who made Kassialife hell were rewarded for their treatment of her,they are never made to pay for what they did to her which is another thing that put me off this book.I like to see the heroine giving as good as she gets even if she's not a particularly strong character.Kassia was far too soft and gentle for this brute as a result he walked all over her quite literally.I wanted him to really suffer for his treatment of her which he didn't,this is why I bothered to finish this book for him to get his comeuppance which hedidn't.She capitulated far too easily in the end when he came to get her at her father's castle.I know that he's a warrior but didn't knights have a chivalric code?

I know Catherine Coulter treads a not so fine line, but in this case her 'hero' is a serial rapist, who, when unduly angered by women, takes them by force. He is consistently awful to his wife and then in the last 10 pages, for no apparent reason, totally changes his tack and decides to love her.
I'm never really sure why she loves him, aside from his physical strength, for there is little that is admirable or lovable about him. This is not a tortured soul looking for healing through love, this is a cruel, quite stupid man who raped a woman in a previous novel, and then rapes his wife in this one.
This one goes straight into the resale pile.

I'm a big Coulter fan, but...

I really hate novels where there's some nasty person who has everybody convinced she's a helpless little victim and thereby makes trouble for the heroine. I really hate novels where the hero RAPES the heroine! I REALLY hate novels where the heroine falls in love with a so-called hero who's being high-handed, brutal, and unfaithful to her. What kind of idiot does that make her? If you agree with me that Patient Griselda should have stuck a knife in her husband's wizend little heart, then you probably won't like this book either. Apologies to Catherine, but I like her later books a lot better.

VERY HELPFUL!!

This is a gem of a book that I refer to often for positioning of those rarely done or difficult to position exams. This book is nearly complete from head to toe in MRI positioning and is easy to read with great photos showing slice selections. It includes pituitary, orbits, cranial nerves, TMJ's, brachial plexus, elbow/FABS view, pancreas, fetal, pelvic arteries, femur/quads/hamstring, foot and other more and less common exams. Each chapter begins with an anatomy drawing with labels to the important/obscure parts. Every section in the chapter clearly states what the different series demonstrate in the anatomy which I find very helpful when a patients diagnosis is already known and certain sequences can provide greater detail for the radiologist. Using this reference has helped build my confidence and made me look really smart to my peers too. Thanks Anne Bright!
