About the Author
Dr Lesley Braun is a registered pharmacist and naturopath. She holds a PhD from RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia, in which she investigated the integration of complementary medicine into hospitals in Victoria. Dr Braun is an Adjunct associate Professor of Integrative Medicine at the National Institute of Complementary Medicine at the University of Western Sydney in Australia. NICM provides leadership and support for strategically directed research into complementary medicine and translation of evidence into clinical practice and relevant policy to benefit the health of all Australians.
Dr Braun serves on the Australian Therapeutic Goods Advisory Council which oversees the implementation of TGA reforms and provides general strategic guidance to the TGA, advice on relationships and communication with stakeholders. She is also on the executive for the Complementary and Integrative Therapies interest group of the Clinical Oncology Society of Australia and an advisory board member to the Australasian Integrative Medicine Association. As of 2014, she is also the Director of Blackmore’s Institute, the academic and professional arm of Blackmores, which entails engaging with a broad range of academics, government and industry bodies and overseeing a comprehensive academic and research program.
Since 1996 she has authored numerous chapters for books and more than 100 articles, and since 2000 has written regular columns for the Australian Journal of Pharmacy and the Journal of Complementary Medicine. She lectures to medical students at Monash University and to chiropractic students at RMIT University, and is regularly invited to present at national and international conferences about evidence-based complementary medicine, drug interactions, complementary medicine safety and her own clinical research.
Her role as the main author of Herbs and Natural Supplements - An Evidence-based Guide represents a continuation of a life-long goal to integrate evidence-based complementary medicine into standard practice and improve patient outcomes safely and effectively.

Professor Marc Cohen is one of Australia’s pioneers of integrative and holistic medicine who has made significant impacts on education, research, clinical practice and policy. He is a medical doctor and Professor of Health Sciences at RMIT University where he leads postgraduate Wellness Programs and supervises research into wellness and holistic health including research on yoga, meditation, nutrition, herbal medicine, acupuncture, lifestyle and the health impact of pesticides, organic food and detoxification. Prof Cohen sits on the Board of a number of national and international associations including the Australasian Integrative Medicine Association, the Global Spa and Wellness Summit and the Australasian Spa and Wellness Association, as well as serving on the Editorial Board of several international peer-reviewed journals. Prof Cohen has published more than 80 peer-reviewed journal articles and co-edited the text ‘Understanding the Global Spa Industry’, along with more than 10 other books on holistic approaches to health. He is a frequent speaker at many national and international conferences where he delivers inspiring, informative and uplifting presentations. His impact on the field has been recognised by four consecutive RMIT Media Star Awards as well as the inaugural Award for Leadership and Collaboration from the National Institute of Complementary Medicine.

A pleasure watching this well-oiled investigating team.

As soon as you begin reading this novel it is obvious there have been previous books. Regardless of that, this novel can definitely be read as a stand-alone book. Sometimes an author doesn't do a very good job of giving new readers enough information to make them comfortable with character run-over from previous books but that definitely was not the case for me with this story. In fact, one of the first things I became comfortable with was how well established the relationships are with all the policemen working in the Shepherd's Bush station. Detective Inspector Bill Slider interacts with his superior officer and the members of his investigation team as if they are a well-oiled working team, taking advantage of the strength and being aware of the weakness of each member. Now they have been handed a murder investigation which involves the death of a popular television personality. The Beebs will not be pleased to have any negative publicity tarnishing its image with this real life drama. The team needs to solve this murder soon, if not sooner. As Superintendent Porson so succinctly puts it, "The early bird gathers no moss. Get on with it."

Not only was this a good reading experience for me from the standpoint of the development of the mystery and everything involved in solving it, it was also quite interesting to discover this team of investigators and to get to know them as individual people. In fact, I enjoyed it so much I have already put Hard Going (A Bill Slider Mystery) on my Kindle and am considering ordering the print omnibus of the first three novels in the series. I like the low key humor in the novel and the way Porson mangles the sayings he's always throwing around in his conversations. The chapter titles are interesting, but something that can be easily ignored if you think they are too cutesy. I find myself having to go back after I finish reading the chapter to look up what the title was in order to figure out what it means. Often I am not interested enough to bother. So, humor to be taken as far as you personally want to take it or left alone if it doesn't interest you. At least the humor isn't allowed to interfere with the actual police investigation work. In my opinion, that's a good decision by the author.

Well-written British procedural

Bill Slider and his team have been enjoying a lull in their work, but their newest homicide case is going to be tricky. The victim, Rowland Egerton, is a daytime TV celebrity known for his expertise on antiques. The press and Slider’s superiors want this case solved immediately, so Slider and team are being pressured to close what is proving to be a difficult and complex case.

I have read many of the books in this outstanding series. “Star Fall” is not the best in the series, but is still an excellent British procedural. I like the main characters, especially the easy comradery between Slider and DS Atherton. I enjoy seeing Slider on the job with the members of his department, as well as seeing him at home with his family. This outing doesn’t have as much of Slider’s home life, and I think that’s was missing for me and made is less enjoyable that some of the other books in the series.

The investigation itself is interesting. In Slider’s latest case, the victim’s life is more complicated that it looks like at the beginning, which makes the case more intriguing. The reader is taken every step of the way as the detectives try to get to the bottom of the murder of a popular celebrity from a television show resembling “Antiques Roadshow”. It was interesting to see the inner workings of the fictional show, as well as seeing how different the victim was in his personal life, as opposed to his public persona.

Even this isn’t my favorite installment, readers who follow this series or who enjoy the books of author Deborah Crombie will find “Star Fall” worth reading.

Somewhat boring mid-book spoils latest entry in charming and entertaining Bill Slider series

“Star” is the 17th and latest in the author’s likable Bill Slider mystery set. Our Detective Inspector runs a police department in Shepherd’s Bush, a London suburb; and most of the stories feature a prominent murder. Herein, an antiques reality show celebrity is found stabbed to death; and the cops are hard up for clues. About the only suspect is the man’s business partner, who actually lived with the TV “star” part-time, when their retail antiques store didn’t require his presence.

The story unfolds so slowly, that we were close to being really bored. A side plot of sorts finds Bill’s wife Joanna grieving over a recent miscarriage; and her sensitive hubby almost overdoes his concern – that issue got a tad tiring as well.

Toward the very end, as some clues finally picked up and we all start to zero in on the villain, things got much more interesting as the case gets tidied up. The getting there was uncharacteristically plodding – so we would not recommend this latest as one of the better novels in this mostly enjoyable series.

A disappointment

Normally, I love the BMJ, particularly their reviews. The information contained in this compilation of reviews about medical education is concise, but this is far less of a book than a pamphlet! I was expecting a book that would cover the subject more extensively, an in-depth examination of how to teach medical students, residents and fellows. For nearly 34 dollars one would expect more than 50 pages of journal reprints. Instead, what you get is bulleted text covering medical education in a cursory manner -- truly a disappointment.

Up to date and concise overview of learning and teaching methods in modern medical practice.It includes theories of learning, course design, collaboration, evaluation and assessment methods. There is a useful section on helping students in difficulty. Altogether an excellent resource.
