Susan Rogers Cooper is half-Texan, half-Yankee, and now lives with her family in a small town in central Texas. She is the author of the ‘E.J. Pugh’ series and the ‘Milt Kovak’ series, amongst other books.

Close to a farce, this light "mystery" in amateur sleuth Pugh series disappoints

We’ve read every book in the Cooper booklist, and have noted before that we tend to prefer her light police procedurals featuring Sheriff Milt Kovak to these tales featuring amateur “sleuth” EJ Pugh. The last several books in this set, now published out of Great Britain, have almost shifted into young adult territory, as about half the novels focus on the teenaged angst of EJ’s three high-school daughters. So herein with “Dead”, the pregnancy of a schoolmate, which has nothing to do with the mystery at hand, and a budding romance of daughter Bess, get as much print, in irritating alternating one-or-two page snippets, as the light plot involving EJ and hubby Willard on a weekend romantic vacation to small-town Peaceful Texas.
While the Pugh’s stay there at a B & B that is supposedly haunted by the elder owner’s former “daddy”, a couple of scamming psychic investigators come to stay; and both wind up getting murdered, which of course sets our busybody EJ into high gear, figuring (as usual) that she can solve the matter better and faster than the police. Meanwhile, in yet a third plot element, we learn of the war-time travails of “Daddy’s” brother Edgar; and follow him over the course of some 40-plus years to the current time. Eventually, all becomes clear in what turns out to be mostly a silly farce almost reminiscent of Carl Hiaasen’s stories.
We foresee a weak future for this set – and declare that with this entry virtually our fourth disappointment in a row, we’re done with EJ.
