This gripping page-turner from British crime novelist Layton (aka Natasha Cooper), the first under her real name, explores the themes of violence, revenge and forgiveness as they affect London stockbroker Cass Evesham and her family. Thanks to her skill and determination, Cass appears to have finally achieved success and recognition in a male-dominated firm when her world is shattered. First, her married boyfriend dumps her, then she learns that her thought-to-be-dead grandmother, Livia, has just been released from prison after serving 25 years for the murder of Cass's grandfather and his lover. Why didn't her mother tell her the truth instead of fabricating the lie that her grandparents were killed in an accident? Why did her grandmother commit such a heinous act? Was her grandmother mad, as some speculated at the time, and could the madness be hereditary? In her search for the answers to these questions, Cass uncovers painful truths about her family and suffers with admirable strength the taunts of the press, gossip and innuendoes at work, as well as the loss of important clients. Layton's insightful and provocative portrait of Livia's existence in prison and the life she leads after her release as she and Cass try to reconnect will engage and touch the reader. While this may not appeal to fans of traditional mysteries, memorable characters and an engrossing plot make this a first-rate psychological thriller.

Review
Layton, better known as mystery writer Natasha Cooper (Prey to All, 2000,etc.), starts putting the pressure on London stockbroker Cass Evesham by offsetting her huge success at her job with the treachery of Alan, her longtime lover, who's chosen the eve of their two-week holiday in the Seychelles to end their affair. Then comes the news that Cass's grandmother Livia has been granted parole after 25 years in jail for the murders of her husband, Henry Claughton, and his mistress, famed diva Flora Gainsborough. Livia's one-time lawyer Gordon Bayley has rented a cottage for her in a remote Cumbrian village where her probation officer, Colin Whyle, pays regular calls, bringing along Bobby, an 11-year-old delinquent, for Livia, once a brilliant young architect, to teach. Visiting for a few days, Cass happens to be at the cottage when Christopher Bromyard, a well-known business figure in London, on a walking tour, collapses on the doorstep, suffering from fatigue and pneumonia. On Cass's return to London, the exhaustively published news of Livia's release forces her into a life of evading the media and eventually into the rescue of her grandmother from a threat that comes from a wholly unexpected quarter.
Less whodunit than psychological thriller, the story gradually reveals the burdens and tensions that led to Livia's crime and delves perceptively into Cass's fears and triumphs. A splendid job.--Kirkus Reviews

poignant drama about people and their expectations
By A Customer
Twenty-five years ago Livia Claughton was sentenced to life imprisonment for killing her husband and his mistress. The trial judge called her a harpy while passing the sentence. The moniker stuck and when Livia was paroled at seventy-five years of age after serving her full sentence, the tabloid press covered the event.
Cass Evesham, a high flyer stockbroker never even knew that Livia was her grandmother until the media tracked her down. Out of curiosity and a sense of family, Cass visits her grandmother in Cumbria, a meeting that is fraught with tension and other suppressed emotions. It is only when Livia's life is placed in danger does Cass come to realize how much she truly does care about her grandmother.
Clare Layton, known to mystery fans as Natasha Cooper, has written a poignant drama about people and their expectations. The heroine of this tale is an elderly woman who has come out of prison as a kind and strong person who won't back down for anyone when she believes she's right. CLUTCH OF PHANTOMS is a novel that takes you two steps beyond the edge.

Cleverly Written Crime Novel
By Mamalinde
In this story with strong undertones of fate, family, foes, forgiveness and fairness, Cass Evesham finds a lot more than a grandmother she believed was dead was actually a murderess. Not a exactly a cozy mystery, the reader always knows "whodunit" - but the arrival of Cass, Livia and Julia in the present makes much of the past. The twists of hate and betrayal are very realistic, as well as Livia's adjustment to society. Ms. Layton etches a clever cast of characters in a very unusual situation. I am hoping she went rather over-the-top with her portrayal of a merciless press, but I sense that she got the vengeful characters just right. A five star read!

Out of Touch
By W. Braunstein
It's difficult to use the plot selections given to describe this book--it would be better described as nonexistent. As you read this book you want so much to develop empathy with at least one of the characters but they never rise to the level of empathetic figures. It seems the intent of the author is to delve into the darker recesses of the characters' feelings and discover the cause of their fatal flaws as you discover their humanity. The circumstances of the novel defy believability, the whole thread of genetic predisposition to murder is superficial, and the behaviors of the main and supporting characters defy rationale in the modern world in which the book is set. The only compelling aspect of this novel is the hope that the story and/or characters will become compelling with the coming chapters.
