Introducing homicide detective Daniel Turner and his troubled friend 'BB' in the first of this atmospheric crime noir series.
Summoned by his old friend, homicide detective Daniel Turner, to identify the trussed-up, naked body of a woman, found wrapped in cellophane amongst a pile of garbage on Blue Avenue, a down-at-heel area of Jacksonville, Florida, businessman William Byrd or ‘BB’ is in for a shock. He recognises the dead woman as Belinda Mabry, the girl with whom he spent an intense and passionate summer twenty-five years before. What’s more, as Daniel informs him, she’s the third victim to have met such a hideously gruesome end.
Determined to find out what happened to Belinda Mabry and where she’d been for the past twenty-five years, BB must revisit his own troubled past – and discover more than he ever really wanted to know about the woman he once loved. But his investigations are causing serious ripples amongst prominent members of the local community. Has BB found himself on a road of no return?

Review
“The revelations will reward readers’ patience.” (Booklist)
"The plot, fueled by a steadily rising body count, boils furiously until it reaches a climax that's both utterly predictable and powerfully unnerving.” (Kirkus Reviews)
"Excellent noir that will attract readers who appreciate the anguished protagonists of Steve Hamilton and Loren D. Estleman.” (Library Journal Starred Review)
“Wiley is extremely good at creating an atmosphere of menacing dread. New shocks occur all the way to the last page―and continue as readers reflect on what they’ve just witnessed.” (Publishers Weekly Starred Review)

“The ground beyond the grass clearing became soft and dropped into a shallow black-water swamp. We trudged ankle-deep past cypress knees, over roots, sludge and God knows what as the sun dipped low and the woods darkened. Night birds whisked through the branches. “You know what lives in this swamp?” I said. Once or twice a year, visiting northerners, men hunting without permit, or hikers found themselves deep in the wetlands and got bitten by a snake or something else invisible and poisonous, and the sheriff’s department airlifted them out – those who had cellphones. Those without cellphones crawled out themselves or didn’t.”

Violent, dark and bloody
By Frost
BLUE AVENUE by Michael Wiley is a noir crime thriller. Very noir. There are no light scenes, no redeeming love, no quick repartee, no lyrical description of scene; it is dark.
Did I like the book? Yes, I could hardly lay it aside, as the search to reveal the killer or killers progressed, peeling away layers of deception. Many suspects, venal, nasty and corrupt are confronted, which is a nice way of saying beaten, coerced and intimidated, until there is only one left standing, albeit streaming blood. A bit of a surprise, only because the author weaves a pretty good web of deceit.
The darkness is in every character, especially William Byrd, "BB"the antihero whose dark ( there is that word again) past of violence and an obsessive desire is the crux of the plot. His wife and teen son love and fear, and fear for, him. BB is estranged from everyone but a mysterious friend, Charles, an amoral, antisocial equal opportunity hater.
As you can read in the plot synopses elsewhere, the story begins when the body of an adult black woman is found, horribly murdered. The police detective, who has had contact with BB in the past calls him to id the body, more to judge BB's reaction than anything else. BB's reaction is seething anger, a desire to find and kill the murderer. Why? Because the woman was his first love, a forbidden, furtive and passionate teen age lust.
The woman is one in a series of prostitute murders, so why her, when and why did she returns to Jacksonville? BB's investigation, aided by the secretive Charles, begins a tide of blood.
Warning: the book is violent contains many scenes of graphic physical , sexual violence, animal abuse, and sex. I am a big boy and I have read tons of noir mysteries, and I must say BLUE. AVENUE read more like a slasher novel or a horror script than a thriller.
Mr. Wiley is a good writer, but I'd be careful of reading his next work.

The seamier side of Jacksonville, Florida...
By janebbooks
Saturday is a good day to visit downtown Jacksonville, Florida. Parking is free on the city streets and one can drive slowly in the maze of one-way streets hunting for a destination. My destination on Saturday June 6 was the Main Library in the middle of downtown. The occasion was the monthly meeting of the Pride Book Club of Jacksonville and a discussion of BLUE AVENUE, a work of fiction by Michael Wiley.
The Pride Book Club meets on a Saturday every month at various locations in Jacksonville and has done so for nearly twenty-two years. The members are a lively, diverse, and interesting group. Their annual book selections are a combination of fiction and nonfiction. With emphasis on African-American themes and characters.
Although South Florida is usually the scene for noir crime stories, Shamus award-winning author Wiley writes about the seamier side of our bustling metropolis in Northeast Florida. Quite a change from his classroom teachings at my alma mater, the University of North Florida, where he teaches 18th and 19th century British poetry. A startling difference in fact--a few murders not committed, in Wiley's words, with a Wordsworth daffodil.
BLUE AVENUE is the first of a series featuring Lt. Detective Daniel Turner of the Jacksonville police. Turner summons his old friend William "BB" Byrd to identify a woman brutally murdered, wrapped in cellophane and dumped into a pile of garbage on Blue Avenue, a down-at-heel area of Jacksonville It is the third such gruesome murder in the area. BB recognizes the victim as a woman he loved 25 years ago and sets out to find the murderer.
Most of the Pride members had read at least parts of the novel and were familiar with the actual places and the fictional characters in the story. They discussed in depth the character development, storyline segues, the real and imagined settings, and the narrator who happens to be a white man who fell in love with a black woman twenty-five years before the story begins.
The member moderator of the discussion asked for comments from the participants at the end. I firmly announced that their BLUE AVENUE talk with the author was the best book club presentation I've attended.
Wiley jokingly hopes the local police will not be too perturbed at his depiction of city crime and that neither they nor the local Chamber of Commerce will run him out of town. (He is contracted with Severn House for two more novels in the series.)
And the Kirkus reviewer of BLUE AVENUE hopes there are enough victims left in Jacksonville for the sequel, the second in the series, SECOND SKIN which will be published on November 1, 2015. Wiley insists it will be a kinder, gentler murder mystery.

Unusual and Highly Captivating
By Kayak Jay
This is an unusual and highly captivating book. The characters are not superheroes but flesh and blood human beings, warts and all. The story is fascinating and full of twists and turns. Concepts of good and evil, right and wrong have no place here. The suspense builds as the story continues, and resolutions appear and fade as time continues. In one sense this is a love story, the story of a love that lived alone for twenty-five years and still drove several of the characters to dramatic changes in their lives. I hope this will be a series, because it is very interesting and entertaining. I recommend it to you.
