1963 was a very bad year for Frank Sinatra,. but the Rat Pack are always ready to give a helping hand. - Eddie Gianelli is helping a friend’s wife get out from under a blackmailer when news comes through that JFK has been assassinated. Frank Sinatra was a close friend of JFK and the Rat Pack – including Eddie – rally round to give Frank moral support. Then comes the news that Sinatra’s son, Frank Jr, has been kidnapped. Eddie continues to search for the blackmailer while trying to help Frank get through his second – and intensely more personal – traumatic experience, all of which eventually leads to murder.

From Booklist
Eddie Gianelli, Vegas pit boss and unofficial fixer for the Rat Pack, rises to the call when Joey Bishop’s TV wife, Abby Dalton, needs help with a blackmailer. That’s easy peasy for a man of Eddie’s unconventional talents, but the case leads him into a very different kettle of fish: the kidnapping of Frank Sinatra’s son. Then there’s the little matter of the murder of a Vegas lowlife, who was in the employ of Dalton’s blackmailer. Unfortunately, the cops like Eddie for that one. Randisi’s series is never less than entertaining—Eddie and his tough-guy pal Jerry Epstein are a fine pair of Everymen cavorting with the stars, and the Rat Packers are typically portrayed with full-bodied gusto. This time, though, Randisi paints himself into a bit of a corner: Bishop is the least interesting Rat Packer; Dalton is a grade-D celeb; and the Sinatra kidnapping story doesn’t give Frank much to do except fret. Still, Randisi’s take on Vegas in its prime is always a treat, and the light, breezy style delivers its own brand of Nelson Riddle, toe-tapping pleasure. --Bill Ott

It was a GREAT year for It Was A Very Bad Year
By Bob Krotts
Randisi continues his excellent series about the Rat Pack Mysteries and this highly anticipated (by me for sure!) release delivers the goods and adds some unexpected twists and celeb appearaces that make it his best to date! Don't plan to read this piece-meal; you will want to read it straight through. I made the mistake of starting it around 10pm and, well, lets just say that I didn't get much sleep that night! Highly recommended!

But It's a Very Fun Book
By Tamela Mccann
So, at first I was a little let down by It Was a Very Bad Year...The initial part of the story was redundant of an earlier story, and there seemed like there was no big mystery after all. But I should have known my Eddie G had way more up his sleeve than just finding some racy pictures of an actress. Eddie G and Big Jerry never let me down, and they certainly didn't in this Rat Pack Mystery.
To recap: Eddie is approached by the on-screen wife of Joey Bishop, Abby Dalton, to help retrieve some pictures she made early on in her career that wouldn't uphold her current good girl status. Naturally, Eddie agrees, and since Big Jerry just happens to be in town with his nephew, he enlists the hit man into intimidating the photographer holding the pictures. While there's some breaking and entering involved, this portion of the story resolves quickly and is a bit ho-hum. And then...Frank Sinatra calls. His son, Frankie Jr., has been kidnapped, and he needs his buddy Eddie to help handle the situation. It should come as no surprise that the earlier bit of the story is woven into the second half, and things are not at all what they seem.
It never ceases to amaze me how adeptly Randisi intertwines actual events with those of the fictional Eddie G, and in this case, he has Eddie helping the FBI make the case against the real-life kidnappers. The way Randisi writes the tale, I am almost convinced this is how it really, truly happened. Eddie and Jerry are delightful as always, and the appearances of the Rat Pack and other celebrities add completely to the atmosphere. Bookended by a short narrative of present-day Eddie looking back, this is a fun entry that will keep you turning the pages.

Bad year....Good book
By Quixote010
I've read all of Robert Randisi's "Rat Pack" books and although none of them are complicated mysteries, they all capture your interest.
Randisi's has written more than 500 books and is the creator of the Shamus Award, a coveted prize presented for the best detective story of the year. Writers like Bill Pronzini, Robert Crais and Mickey Spillane have received it, so I think he knows how to write a good tale.
For the uninitiated, Randisi's Rat Pack stories surround issues faced by Frank Sinatra and his legendary hoard of Sammy Davis, jr., Dean Martin, Peter Lawford and Joey Bishop in the early 60s. Told by Sand's pit boss Eddie Gianelli, the stories often include the friends of these celebrities and result in Eddie G and his mob-connected friend, Jerry, taking care of issues for the fellows. Each story has an actual historical connection, and Randsis connects the characters seamlessly.
In this particular tale, the main issue surrounds the kidnapping of Frank Jr. Eddie and Jerry have been involved on another specific problem for Abby Dalton, Bishop's tv wife, when Sinatra seeks his assistance. Eddie and Jerry fend for the answers for both situations in an easy-to-read, fast moving short novel.
You don't have to read these adventures from the first book, but subtle inferences helps you to understand Eddie's relationship to the stars. Besides, read one and you'll be hooked on the others. If you like reoccurring characters, Hollywood and Vegas, then you'll be smitten by these books...ring-a-ding ding!!
