From Publishers Weekly
Mary Higgins Clark fans who aren't too finicky about legal detail will welcome this domestic suspense novel from MacDonald (Stolen in the Night). When Brooklyn grad student Morgan Adair, who's agreed to be godmother to the infant son of her best friend, Claire Bolton, attends the baptism in West Briar, Long Island, it's clear that the stresses of motherhood have overwhelmed Claire. A few days later, Claire phones Morgan at the airport, where Morgan's about to depart for England to do research on feminist Harriet Martineau (and pursue romance with an English poet), to say she's killed her son and husband. Despite this confession, which Claire also made to the police, the skeptical Morgan launches her own investigation. Less than realistic law references (e.g., an academic expert on involuntary admissions of guilt states, Believe me, all investigating ceases when a suspect confesses. It's generally agreed that the police don't need anything more) may give some readers pause. (Jan.)

*Starred Review* Morgan Adair is thrilled when her best friend, Claire, asks her to be godmother to Claire and her husband Guy’s new baby. As soon as the christening on Long Island Sound is over, Morgan intends to take off for England’s Lake District to meet her newfound love and work on her doctoral thesis. But when Morgan arrives at the church, she realizes that Claire is in the grip of a terrible postpartum depression, and the vivacious friend she once knew is now fearful, miserable, and teary. Still, the christening goes well enough, and Morgan, somewhat guiltily, heads for London. But at the airport, she receives a shocking telephone call from Claire, who announces she has been arrested for the murder of her husband and child. Horrified, Morgan knows she must cancel her trip and stay to help her friend, who is the last person in the world she would have believed could carry out such a terrible crime. The evidence against Claire is damning and incontrovertible, and only the ever-loyal Morgan thinks there might be more to the story, but when she begins to try to unravel the mystery, she stumbles on a dark and terrible secret. Taut and gripping, with mind-bending twists and turns, this chilling page-turner from the best-selling MacDonald will delight fans of psychological thrillers, romantic suspense, and women’s fiction. --Emily Melton

Easy enjoyable reading
By Samantha
If you are looking for entertaining reading without having to remember 20 different characters, this is a good read. Suspenseful, without being gory. I've read all of Patricia MacDonald's books and they are all great. This wasn't her best, but better than most junk being churned out every 2 months by some other authors.

Bless The Child
By The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers
Morgan and Claire have been best friends since childhood and Morgan was the maid of honor in Claire and Guy's wedding. When Claire gives birth to Drew, it is only fitting she asks Morgan to be his godmother. After Drew's birth, Claire begins to show signs of post-natal depression and the baby's upcoming christening is supposed to be a joyous occasion. Morgan offers as much support as possible, but when a secret from Guy's past shows up at their front door, Claire plummets deeper into her depression.
Several days after the christening, Morgan receives disturbing news; Guy and baby Drew have been murdered and Claire has been charged with their murders. Morgan knows Claire isn't capable of murdering her loved ones and conducts an investigation of her own.
Just when you think you know who killed Guy and baby Drew, MacDonald switches gears. Many of the scenes are told in illustrated detail, from the murders to Claire's interrogation at the police station. I liked Morgan's loyalty to prove her friend's innocence, although at times she questions Claire's capability of murdering her family. FROM CRADLE TO GRAVE is an enjoyable suspenseful tale of family secrets, murder, and friendship.

Style a bit stilted
By Harley
I did not like the writing style. It does not flow in the way a novel should. Perhaps this is because the author over describes simple things resulting in a stilted, awkward flow. It is often sequences of what the character did with little or no insight as to how they really feel or think. The storyline is a suspense based around the jailing of the central character's best friend for the murder of her spouse and baby. However, while this results in a tense few chapters of did she or didn't she, the whole resolution does not work for me. The motivations and actions of the family members involved do not ring true and this may be both the believability of their motives as set out and the unconvincing style of the writing. I found it difficult to have much sympathy with the accused as she really did not come alive as a character for me. Her friend Morgan is the most fleshed out but again I did not connect with her. I did not feel her pain at the loss of her godson nor her anxiety for her friend although this is told. This again is a fault in the writing. Overall I gave this a three even though I may sound more negative here. In fairness, this is not a truly bad book. The plot is good, the solution is not immediately obvious and it is an easy read. Others reviewing have remarked on the simplicity. My recommendation would be to download the sample first before buying this as if you have no problems with the style then this might be for you. If you can't do this as you are buying a hardcopy then perhaps look at something else. There are a lot better books out there.
