About the Author
Lyndon Stacey is an animal portrait artist by trade and lives in the Blackmore Vale in the West Country, where most of her novels are set. She is the author of several mysteries including Blindfold, Deadfall, Outside Chance, Six to One Against and Murder in Mind, as well as two previous Daniel Whelan mysteries.

Third time is not a charm

This is the third in the Daniel Whelan series and although I enjoyed it there were some flaws. As other reviewers pointed out Daniel was originally called in by his former colleague to watch over the colleague's fiancée who was being stalked by a stranger in a gray hoodie. This stranger made several appearances but was not one of the bad guys; so who was he and why was he stalking Tami? Another dropped ball, in my opinion, was the on-going backstory of Daniel's relationship with his son Drew. In No Holds Barred the question was raised of Drew's living with Daniel. In Nothing But Lies there is barely a mention of Drew...very irritating. And finally, in the last two titles there have been some teasing mentions of DI Paxton, implying that he was one of the crooked cops that got Daniel out of the force and hinting at some come-uppance, which, alas, has not happened so far.
That being said I do like the series; Daniel reminds me of some of Dick Francis' protagonists...a good man trying to right some wrongs while adhering to his own strict moral code. But I hope the author takes more care with her characters and stories in future titles.

Who is the guy in the grey hoodie?

The title of this novel was just a little misleading because Daniel Whelan isn't actually a police dog handler -- at least not since his career with the Bristol Met came to an end. Daniel chose to try to fight the corruption he found in his department, had the tables turned on him, and paid the price. Now he's driving big rig trucks for a living. At least he does have a trained German shepherd named Taz as his constant companion and he really needed that dog during this case.
Daniel and Taz travel to Maiden Ashton, a village just outside Bristol, to help out his friend Jo-Ji Matsuki who is still a dog handler with the Bristol police force. Jo-Ji thinks someone is stalking his partner Tamiko and he wants Daniel to keep an eye on her to find out who the guy in the grey hoodie might be. Once Daniel and Taz are on the scene things start happening in a fast and furious fashion.
This is the third book in the Daniel Whelan mystery series and readers who like lots of physical action along with their criminal investigation will appreciate watching Daniel and his dog get themselves out of multiple scrapes. My three star rating simply means this book wasn't quite as compelling for me as I would have liked, mostly because the characters, even the dog, didn't seem to have quite enough definite personality. While I found it interesting it didn't make me want to rush to the computer to order the first two novels in the series.

A Good Addition to the Series

How can you not love a book with an intelligent dog as the true hero. This is a good story, but there are a few loose ends. Tami sees the hooded man long before anything else happens, and he is not the guilty one, so who is he? My other problem with Lyndon Stacey's books is that the poor hero gets beaten almost into a pulp over and over again, and still is able to stand up and fight. Just a bit improbable, but it is good to know that Daniel has found another friend in the force he left under a cloud.
But for all that, the book is entertaining and absorbing.
