In 1629, the Dutch East India merchantman, the Batavia, was wrecked on reef islands off the West Australian coast while on her maiden voyage. For the survivors, this disaster was the beginning of a harrowing ordeal of desertion betrayal and murder. As their captain, Pelsaert, sailed for help, over 125 men, women and children were murdered by mutineers in a frenzy of bloodlust and greed. When Pelsaert returned, months later, with a rescue ship, the marooned were caught in a desperate battle between soldiers trying to defend them and the mutineers who were determined to leave no witnesses.

"...a human being often finds his worldly welfare has fallen to the hands of 2 or 3 perfidious men"--Capt. Francisco Pelsaert
By mwreview
"Islands of Angry Ghosts" is a two-part study on the Batavia, a Dutch East India merchant ship which ran aground and sunk off the coast of West Australia in 1629. Passengers and crew who survived on the islands endured sheer terror, as the undermerchant and his followers had mutinous plans to take over the rescue ship and killed anyone who stood in the way of their plans. First, the book goes into a brief history of the shipwreck and the horrors that occurred on the island after the captain left to find help. The second part covers the search for the wreck and the 1963 recovery of artifacts on the ship and islands. The author, Hugh Edwards, led the first expedition to the site of the sunken Batavia after its discovery. He also helped in an earlier, unsuccessful quest to find the wreck.
The value of this book is in the second part, as other studies more thoroughly examine the activities on the Batavia and islands. "Batavia's Graveyard" by Mike Dash, for example, covers in great detail the background of mutiny leader Jeronimus Cornelisz and his affiliation with the Torrentius cult. The many killings on the islands Edwards describes quickly. Not much is written about the young, blood-thirsty Jan Pelgrom as there is in Dash's work. Dash also examines very thoroughly the punishments levied on the conspirators, from the way hands were removed, the unusual way in which two of the convicted were marooned, to the gruesome details of how the final execution was carried out. Edwards barely touches any of these subjects. He may not have wanted to cover the history in too much depth as Henrietta Drake-Brockman--whose insistence on disproving the common view on which exact islands the nightmare occurred--was completing her book at the same time. One interesting point taken from Edward's history of the events is his sympathetic view towards Batavia Captain Francisco Pelsaert.
The second part of the book begins on page 109. First in consideration was which islands were what became known as Batavia's Graveyard. The HMS Beagle surveyed the area and labeled the wrong islands as "Wreck Point." Drake-Brockman acquired copies of Pelsaert's journals in preparation for writing a novel on the subject. She concluded the wreck was north of the Abrolhos on Noon Reef and the graveyard was thus on a different island (she guessed Grossland) than was historically thought. This assertion was met with strong opposition. In 1960, Edwards decided to investigate. He chose Beacon Island, which was in the vicinity of Grossland.
The initial search attempt was unsuccessful but, three years later, the Batavia was discovered on Morning Reef, only a few hundred yards from where Edwards had investigated. Beacon Island was, in fact, Batavia's Graveyard. Here, his expertise makes this work an important, unique addition on the Batavia subject. He discusses the artifacts found on the wreck and the skeletal remains and relics found on the islands. This reviewer wishes they had spent time excavating Seals Island (Long Island) where the conspirators were hanged. Since they were left hanging and their bodies not buried, it is understandable, however, that little would be found.
Because of the author's first-hand experience on the site of the ship and the islands, he provides closure to the legend of the Batavia. Edwards has a charming, story-telling style, especially when describing his meeting and encounters with the feisty Drake-Brockman. Though he seems a bit melodramatic when detailing the management of the expedition ("...the whole expedition hung on the drawstring of my soul, like that dead albatross around the Ancient Mariner's neck," pg. 141), he exhibits a writer's flair. The chapters are very short, so this book makes for good lunch-time reading material. This reviewer would have liked notations on some of the illustrations that begin the chapters. Some have obvious relation to the Batavia, but others are unexplained. The book includes a map, photos, and bibliography.

By DavyJones
Exciting reading about a true 17th century shipwreck that makes the story of the mutiny on the Bounty seem like a Sunday school picnic. Also highly interesting on archaeological finds which which confirm the events that took place.
