Wish it had been a lot more concise with less hype

The university I work at has had a number of midfulness at work posters go up in the last year. So I was very excited to get this book. I was less excited on page 29 when I still did not actually know what mindfulness was. And less excited on page 50 when I was still not quite sure on page 50. It was feeling like more hype than substance. Finally around page 100 I felt like I was getting some idea of what to do. So it is wordy. I would have much more appreciated a concise guide for us dummies.
The information in the book is good, and much of the wordy talk about how the brain was interesting. What really drug me down was the breathlessly long passages almost evangalizing mindfulness in the workplace. There is definitely a role for that, but it just seemed a little excessive.
I'm glad I read this book, but it didn't give me the sense that a lot of dummies give me, where I just got a concise introduction to a subject. This book really seemed too wordy and less focused than I've come to expect from the series. Also, a surprising amount of typos make it into the book. It's not a bad book, but it is far from great. I do now feel that I have an idea of what mindfulness is and and I appreciated the exercises, but the reading experience left something to be desired.

Good resource on becoming more mindful at work

"Mindfulness at Work for Dummies" by Shamash Alidina and Juliet Adams is an excellent guide for anyone wanting to incorporate mindfulness practice into their work life. It is clear and provides a very good overview of the concept of mindfulness and a home program to improve your mindfulness, not only in work, but life in general. The book then contains work specific applications of being mindful and how this practice can make your work place, meeting, and leading better.
The book is divided into six parts which include:
Part 1: Getting Started with Mindfulness at Work. This section contains chapters that focus on what mindfulness at work is, the benefits of mindfulness at work, and applying mindfulness at work.
Part 2: Working with Mindfulness. There are five chapters in this section that focus on practicing mindfulness day to day, boosting your mental resilience, training for mindfulness at work, applying mindfulness at work training, and practicing mindfulness in the Digital Age.
Part 3: Mindfulness for Organizations. The four chapters in this section deal with improving team performance, assisting different business functions, integrating mindfulness with coaching, and commissioning mindfulness training in the workplace.
Part 4: Leading with Mindfulness. For any leader, the three chapters in this section can help the effectiveness of your leadership. They deal with thriving on the challenges of leadership, leading without boundaries, and leading people, change and strategy.
Part 5: The Part of Tens. This staple of the Dummies books provides five lists of ten that include: Ten Ways to Be More Mindful at Work, Ten Ways to Improve Your Brain with Mindfulness, Ten Ways to Mindfully Manage Work Pressures, Ten Ways to be Mindful in a Minute, and About Ten Resources for Further Study.
There are also two short appendixes to help with your research.
While it could be helpful to understand mindfulness before reading this book, I don't think it is absolutely necessary. The authors do a great job of explaining mindfulness and teaching the concepts thorough exercises so that the reader can understand what it is and how to apply the principles to their work.
This is an old mental discipline that those of us in the martial arts have practiced for thousands of years. (Others besides martial artists have practiced it too.) And while some think of Mindfulness as something in Buddhism or Taoism, modern science has researched mindfulness as a secular practice and discovered its tremendous benefits. This book offers an accessible and pretty comprehensive look at the way mindfulness can help in the workplace. In a secular manner, the book does not delve into any religious aspects or notions that some may associate with the practice. The book can be read, and mindfulness can be practiced by anyone, regardless of any other beliefs.
Now that I've read the book once through, I'm going to go back and do the exercises and go through the mindfulness at work training as provided in a couple of the chapters. I'm looking forward to using this book as a guide and adding new mindfulness exercises into my training.
I recommend this book to anyone wanting to be more mindful at work and in life.

Consider reading a shorter book

Mindfulness is a derived from awareness in meditation techniques. If you are interested in reading about awareness, I recommend reading the short, concise book Buddhism Plain and Simple by Steve Hagen.
Mindfulness for Dummies instead feels like course notes consolidated to create 375 pages, most of which say add the mantra "Mindfulness" (as meaning becoming self aware) in front of contemporary management, time management, pop psychology practices. For example, contemporary email management involves setting times and priorities for emails. This book presents standard email management practices and prefaces this with adding that one's mindfulness of email management additionally helps. Another example, conflict management is a popular management topic, and here authors add "Mindfulness" (that is, one's own self-awareness) before implementing the standard conflict management methods. After 375 pages, with the mantra text "mindfulness" occurring probably 20 times Per Page-- OK, readers have read "mindfulness" 7,000 times.
80% of this book is written by simply adding "Mindfully", "Mindfulness", "Mindful" in front of contemporary management ideas that reader may have already read elsewhere. It's like the authors are trying to promote a mass-appeal mantra (repetitive phrase or word).
And 60% of this book feel more like a sales pitch for mindfulness training--chaptes 1-5 sells the benefits of mindfulness (75 pages), there's even an entire chapter on how to sell mindfulness training to a corporation.
I'm Eastern, so to a great part, agree with the direction authors are taking. But be mindful, that Eastern approaches don't necessarily work for many or perhaps even most Westerners, because their thought processes are very different. Still, notice that many classic Eastern works on meditation are short and concise, Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and Zen koans for example. This book feels like a set of lecture notes authors have been accumulating for many years, and then said, let's throw everything at the reader.
And, as the authors state, even after carefully reading all this, chances are you, the reader, aren't going to achieve mindfulness, because mindfulness can primarily be learned only through live courses and coaching. There's probably truth to this, as gurus throughout the ages have primarily taught by live transfer. But, as authors themselves suggest, this book seems to work best as notes for their mindfulness courses and coaching.
Meditation awareness (mindfulness) is historically taught by self-discovery methods. Here, the authors want to teach via explicit guidelines, a methodology which is actually described as middlinng by historical teachings. See for example the story of transmissionn of the 7th Zen Patriarch with the 6th Patriarch's comment on the weak teaching method of the First-in-Line Monk.
A 2 star for a reader experienced in Eastern meditation readings. A 4 star for a reader with no such experience and wants only a business perspective. Three stars overall.
