From Booklist
It’s 1955, and the U.S. is still recovering from the horrors of WWII. Military hero Dwight Eisenhower is president, but some see him as far too liberal, too soft on communism, and too ready to give in to America’s enemies, namely the USSR. A far-right-wing senator named Bohn takes matters even further than his colleague Joe McCarthy, putting in place a plan to assassinate President Eisenhower. Secret Service Agent Frank Isherwood, however, has been able to stay one step ahead of multiple assassination attempts, but, unbeknownst to him and the Secret Service, there is another assassin lurking, and this one is highly competent, fearless, and motivated by a deep hatred of everything for which America and Eisenhower stand. Creepy, violent, suspenseful, fast paced, and chockablock with unexpected twists, Altman’s latest is a gripping and thoroughly satisfying read. A must for fans of The Manchurian Candidate. --Emily Melton

The devil exists
By Fran C
This is the story of a man named Ish who needed redemption and was redeemed- an alcoholic former Secret Service agent called upon to be his best self and foil a plan to assassinate President Eisenhower in 1955. After a failed assassination attempt by poison, the Secret Service hides the truth from Ike while keeping him isolated in the country to recover from what he was told was a heart attack.
Who were the perpetrators and why, and when would they make the next move? As we follow the twists and turns we get a dose of post-World War II politics.
The pace is fast. It is a page-turner. The writing is good, occasionally requiring a dictionary, but not often enough to interfere with the pleasure of reading.
The violence is a bit too graphic for my taste. Men are heroes or at least strong villains. Women are not admirable, the strong are on the wrong side and the weak are, well… weak. The mix of fact and fiction made for many sessions with Wikipedia. There was much historical detail- Nixon, McCarthy, Hoover. It’s a great lesson for those of us who were bored by history in school.

A great example of modern historical fiction
By Michael Zucker
This book used an interesting style of storytelling: giving an equal amount of time to every major character, hero and villain alike. Francis and Elizabeth, both shaped by World War II, drove the story forward and were fascinating to read. I was disappointed that Eisenhower didn't appear often, but Mr Altman made up for this with a colorful cast of characters. Also, as an admirer of the General and President, I appreciated Mr Altman's emphasis on Ike's role in defeating Hitler, a fact many modern historians have incorrectly refuted.

Great read, well-researched, page-turner
By Meri Ney
A well-researched read about the fallout of WWII and the Eisenhower era. Characters feel real, flawed individuals dealing with real life struggles. I would have liked it to be longer and the character of Elisabeth developed more. But overall an enjoyable and captivating read.
