A good read, but there are better

I thought 18 Hours was a decent read, it is written rather simply and the author going on and on about how fabulous the SASR is gets a little old. But there are not a lot of books written about the Australian involvement in the Long War. This is an account of Operation Anaconda and two Australians from the SASR attached to the American's 10th Mountain division for the operation. The protagonist in the book, Jock Wallace was a member of the 152 SIG, the signalers attached to the SASR regiment, not a SASR operator. Which isn't to discredit him, just to ensure potential readers know this isn't about a team of SAS soldiers high in the Afghan mountains. The Australians are attached to a conventional US unit and the book is a interesting account of a conventional unit's battle on a lonely ridge. Its not a bad book, but there are better and more interesting reads about the war in Afghanistan available.

Australian service in Afghanistan

This book caught my attention, as I have found that there is not a long list of literature, which details Australia's involvement in Afghanistan. This book is the story of Australian signalman Martin "Jock" Wallace and his participation in Operation Anaconda. I felt that Wallace and his experience in "hell's half pipe" was presented comprehensively. I found myself particularly interested by Wallace's account that his modern assault weapon had less range than an SLR rifle, which frustrated him in the field of battle, as he could have engaged more of the enemy with an SLR. Some of the personal insights, such as Wallace using his provision wrappers as stationery to write home with, was a helpful detail to understand the at times lack of luxuries available during deployments. This book certainly honours the effort of Australian personnel serving in Afghanistan.

A great inside view

A sensational look behind the headlines where an Australian hero is presented to the public with a high medal pinned to his chest. It's a testament to the endurance and commitment of these soldiers to their mission, their fellow soldiers and their integrity. It's also a very Australian story. No wonder the Americans are in awe of the skills and mettle of Australian SAS soldiers!
