Was mislead by the title and blurb so not the book I thought I bought - good book nonetheless but not for me
By Josh
A good book for anyone starting out in their career. Unfortunately I am not and so 80% of the content scratches the surface on lessons, experiences and situations I have already faced. I would recommend it to people in the first 10 years of their career - it does contain good general advice on a breadth of key areas. I would not recommend it to people outside of that.

Excellent help for workers early in their careers
By Dr. Peter Davies
I liked this book. It's about basic personal growth and management in the workplace. It's really aimed at helping younger workers (approx 16-30) establishing themselves in a place and field of work.
There's a lot of very sensible advice within it- and some challenges too. The problem with these kind of books is that by the time you have enough experience to fully understand the challenges the author is making, you may also have picked up some dysfunctional learning around who and what you are and how your job is best got through. That said if when I'd started work as a doctor age 24 I'd had this book or a similar one I'd have made a few less mistakes.
This book will help people to do their jobs better- so that they produce more for their customers, employer and for themselves. They may also save themselves digressions up blind alleys, some broken relationships, some time, much angst. They'll know how to get on with their jobs and when leaving a job is genuinely career development.
The book has an excellent emphasis on relationships- with others- and on how you remain yourself whilst altering your behaviour to help meet the needs of others. It's a difficult transition from education to workplace, and it's bewildering at first. There's two extremes with the naive but highly cerebral graduate and the eminently practical, but entirely unimaginative, old laggard who's "always done it this way round here." Neither extreme is desirable.
For me as an experienced worker there was still some new learning within this book. There are some new ideas in here amongst much which is tried and tested. I liked his idea of the "confidence box" and giving yourself recognition when you have achieved a specific outcome or realisation. If you get recognition of your achievements by others that's great, but they won't always notice what you are doing, and won't always remember to give you the positive feedback you deserve. His suggestion is to keep a note of your personal achievements- and then when you are asked to give an example of an achievement in an interview you have several to choose from. Also keeping your own file of examples is good for your own confidence- people will be quick enough to criticise when they need to- and you need a strategy for handling this. Having a file of examples of good things you've done can help you get dealing with a criticism in perspective. I suspect for many doctors keeping a list of cases dealt with well could help them get the occasional complaint into better perspective.
There's much to like in this book and many people could learn something from returning to its properly basic knowledge. It's particularly going to be helpful to new and younger workers getting used to functioning in a workplace.
I suspect some of the "older hands" might find it either a useful reminder or a source for some new ideas as well. Sometimes we teach other people that which we most need to learn for ourselves. Every so often it helps the older ones to revisit "basic foundations."
