But the case takes several unexpected turns as Foggy makes his way from seedy Fry's Bay to Indian Seminole swampland, undertaking a vision quest, a rite of passage in some Native American cultures, in the process.
Along the way he encounters more than a few interesting characters, including John Horse, an Indian mystic, and works to foil a vast land-grab scam by an uber-rich felon.
Amusing yet moving, mixing passion with pathos, and introducing some memorable characters, Phillip DePoy has created a hugely entertaining new series.

About the Author
Phillip DePoy is the Edgar award-winning author of thirteen novels, including the Flap Tucker and Fever Devilin series, thirty-seven plays and several works of non-fiction. He has served as artistic director for professional theatre companies and several university theatre programmes.

I felt a distinctive metallic punch in my lower back. I had felt such a sensation before. It was a pistol.
Fat rolled his eyes. ‘Boys,’ he said, in a very soothing tone, ‘leave the nice man alone. He’s digesting.’
‘I said,’ the kid to my left told me, ‘we don’t like it that you’re looking for Lynette.’
I nodded. ‘Fat,’ I said philosophically, ‘I must apologize for what is about to happen.’
Fat stared me in the eye and seemed to understand. ‘OK,’ he told me affably. ‘But don’t make too much of a mess. It’s been a long night already.’
‘I completely understand,’ I said.
Then, without further discourse, I jabbed my fork into the trachea of the boy to my left.|I ran like a football player over the wet streets, only I was carrying a comatose baby in my arms instead of a pigskin. I felt like I was in a dream. The lights were vague, the moon had gone behind clouds, the air was cold and damp as a crypt.
After a couple of blocks I could hear a rattle in my throat, and I was wheezing like a broken concertina. I couldn’t figure why I was so winded, or why the street seemed like an appealing bed.
Another turn and I could see the lights of the hospital. I was completely done in, and I couldn’t see straight. I squeezed my eyes shut to try and clear the cotton balls out of my head. I thought maybe I could manage to yell before I went down, and someone from the emergency dock might hear me. Maybe.
Somehow, I kept running. I could hear the clop of my Florsheims on the pavement. In the distance, the noise of the hospital was beginning to get clearer. Then, like a lighthouse keeper or a sea captain’s widow, there was Nurse Maggie Redhawk. She was standing at the double doors of the emergency entrance, and she was barking out orders. I couldn’t hear exactly what she was saying, but for some reason that gave me the extra juice to kick into the last few yards and, before I knew it, I was handing over the little package of baby to a gaggle of medical personnel.
Maggie and I managed a bit of eye contact, just before I sank into the Dead Sea.
By the time I swam back to the surface, it was day. I was lying on a gurney near the nurses’ station and the light was killing me. I was covered up with a sheet, but it wasn’t over my face so I figured I wasn’t dead.

Best work to date, looking forward to more Foggy Moskowitz.

It has been six days since I finished this book. I needed time to think about what to write. Cold Florida was a surprise to me as I expected (from the writer himself) another Fever Devilin novel was coming my way. I love Fever Devilin novels with their strange characters and spirits sprinkled liberally throughout. And thanks to Goodread's sweet feature of letting you know when an author you have read before has another book out, I learned about Phillip DePoy's new novel. [I've been searching for Fever Devilin since January (2016) in my anticipation of a new book.] Anyway, my first act should be to apologize to Mr. DePoy for that briefest moment of irritation I felt at not having Fever back in my life. Today, I am elated with Mr. DePoy's decision to go another route and in his creation of Foggy Moskowitz. To me, this is his best work yet and I am so looking forward to a second one. I loved the book, loved the humor, loved the unique (hard to do these days) story. Hey, loved it all. Highly recommend this book. It absorbed me (read it in a day) and left me hoping for more. Thank you Phillip DePoy.

wonderful new series

a wonderful start to a promising series.
i find it more like the Easy books than the Fever Devlin books, but that may just be me.
it's a novel with great quirky characters and situations that does not take itself too seriously.
they are, as another review pointed out, funny, and have lines you want to reread.
I sidled up to the counter by the cash register,
the tune "So What" was playing.
This was not only a fine Miles Davis tune
but also a relatively correct philosophical attitude, in my opinion.
i look forward to reading more Foggy novels in the future.

not your usual mystery

Great read. Wonderful quirky characters and a good mystery. It's about a child protective caseworker in Florida with a slightly offbeat criminal past. It' a bit hard to describe the story line but I found it very enjoyable. I would like to see more stories with these characters.
